We’re a tight-knit, collaborative group responsible for supporting many teams throughout the organization to ensure they have the resources they need to be successful while likewise protecting Asana’s core values and interests. We run ideas past each other, we problem-solve together, we partner with other groups to navigate them through challenging issues, and we’re growing our team.

Specifically, we’re looking for a San Francisco-based Lead Privacy Counsel to join our global privacy team. This role requires an attorney with a business-first mindset and a passion for global privacy laws. This is a great opportunity to help scale a global privacy program and work closely with business and technical stakeholders in a mission-driven company. We are looking for a team player who brings a pragmatic and collaborative mindset to solving problems.

This role is based in our San Francisco office with an office-centric hybrid schedule. The standard in-office days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Most Asanas have the option to work from home on Wednesdays. Working from home on Fridays depends on the type of work you do and the teams with which you partner. If you're interviewing for this role, your recruiter will share more about the in-office requirements.

What you’ll achieve

  • Provide clear and practical advice to various teams throughout Asana on privacy and data protection laws, privacy-by-design, and data governance
  • Develop and implement strategies around compliance with new and developing privacy laws
  • Help the business achieve their goals by advising on compliance needs for customers in regulated industries
  • Keep up to date with new and existing data protection regulations and regimes, including but not limited to GDPR, LGPD, state privacy laws, privacy related AI regulations, and data transfer mechanisms
  • Conduct DPIAs, privacy assessments, legitimate interest assessments, and other assessments for internal data processing activities and third-party vendors
  • Be an ambassador for Asana’s privacy program by delivering training and building out documentation and other programming
  • Support global incident response and mature documentation and procedures
  • Help Asana grow globally by supporting global privacy, data protection, and data governance initiatives

About you

  • JD from an accredited law school and U.S-qualified (California bar membership or California registered in-house counsel preferred)
  • 8+ years of experience working in privacy either in-house at a technology company and/or at a law firm counseling companies on privacy issues
  • You love privacy-related work and view protecting privacy not only as a compliance obligation but also as the right thing to do for our customers
  • Deep knowledge of GDPR, state privacy laws, and a solid understanding of other global privacy and cybersecurity laws
  • Interest in global regulatory compliance in highly regulated industries such as government, financial services, and healthcare
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with lawyers and non-lawyers across the company
  • Excellent legal and business judgment with the ability both to assess and communicate risks to business partners in a clear, actionable fashion to facilitate compliance programs that grow with the business
  • Track record of taking initiative, having the ability to work independently, effectively prioritize and handle multiple projects with competing deadlines, and ability to thrive in ambiguity

At Asana, we're committed to building teams that include a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills, as this is critical to helping us achieve our mission. If you're interested in this role and don't meet every listed requirement, we still encourage you to apply.
