Are you a writer deeply engaged in the Black tech and venture capitalist industries, or closely following the political dynamics shaping these sectors? Blavity Inc. invites you to bring your expertise to Afrotech.com. We are seeking contributors who are actively covering both the 2024 presidential election's implications for Black tech and ongoing developments in Black venture capitalism. Join our team to deliver thought-provoking, timely content that enhances our brand’s voice and sparks pivotal conversations. This is a prime opportunity to influence and inform the Black tech community and beyond. Make your mark—contribute to shaping the narrative at the intersection of technology and venture capital.

This is a 1099 contract role that reports to the Managing Editor, AFROTECH.

Contractors will be responsible for providing their own equipment, including but not limited to laptop computers, cell phones, or any other electronic equipment required to perform their role.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and pitch ideas to contribute 8-10 timely and insightful pieces a month focusing on the intersection of the tech industry and the 2024 presidential election—addressing current developments, policy implications, and political impact on the industry
  • Monitor the latest tech, venture capital, and political updates rigorously to identify breaking stories, emerging trends, and events
  • Identify tech experts, political analysts, and industry leaders who may oppose or support your perspective to encourage thought-provoking discussions
  • Maintain meticulous records of sources, fact-checking and researching all materials necessary to ensure accuracy and credibility
  • Facilitate smooth collaboration with editors to contribute well-written and quality pieces

Qualifications:

  • Education: B.A. in Journalism, Communication, or a related field
  • Required Experience:
    • 3-4 years of experience writing and reporting for a digital news publication
    • An extensive background and interest in tech and politics
  • Preferred Experience:
    • Previous experience contributing to a publication on a consistent basis
  • Technologies: Fluent in Google Suite, Asana, and/or comparable project management suite
  • Additional Qualifications:
    • Knowledgeable of tech, venture capital, and politics, especially related to the Black community
    • Independent, entrepreneurial self-starter who is comfortable taking on a high level of responsibility
    • High-energy and positive attitude; must be motivated to work hard in a fast-paced environment
    • Excellent communication and analytical skills; outgoing and sociable
    • Naturally detail-oriented, with an obsessive need to document and communicate findings
    • A healthy appreciation of GIFs and Black culture

Details:

  • This is a fully remote, U.S.- based role. Occasional travel may be required.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Candidates must be available to work in alignment with the Eastern Time Zone.
  • The rate for this role is $140 per piece.
