Accounting software hasn’t fundamentally changed in decades. The tools professional accountants rely on were built for a world of manual entry, static reporting, and single-client workflows. We think that’s broken and we’re fixing it.
Puzzle rebuilt the general ledger from the ground up for how modern accounting firms actually operate: high-volume, multi-client, real-time, API-connected. We’re building financial infrastructure that professionals can trust, and then extending it with automation, reporting, and intelligent workflows that meaningfully change how firms operate.
Now we’re looking for a Software Engineering Manager who can both lead and build.
This is not a “hands-off” management role. We want someone close to the code, someone who can dive into architecture discussions, review complex PRs, unblock engineers technically, and contribute directly when needed. The exact coding-to-management ratio may evolve based on your strengths and the team’s needs, but technical credibility is non-negotiable.
The Opportunity
Puzzle is an early stage company where leverage matters more than headcount. The right engineering leader won’t just ensure delivery- they’ll boost the velocity, clarity, output, and ambition of the entire team.
You’ll work cross-functionally with Product, Design, Data, and GTM to turn ambiguous problems into crisp strategy and high-impact execution. This role is about more than shipping, it’s about shaping what we build and why. You’ll bring technical insight into roadmap decisions early, not react to them late, translating complexity into focused, high-output engineering work.
You’ll set a high bar for ownership and accountability while creating an environment where strong engineers can do the best work of their careers.
Which team you lead will depend on your strengths and where you can create the most leverage. You might manage core infrastructure, customer-facing product engineering, or fintech integrations. We align the team to the leader, not the other way around.
What You’ll Do
Lead and develop a high-performing team of engineers with clear expectations and a consistently high bar
Hire exceptional talent and partner with recruiting to design rigorous, high-signal interview processes that increase talent density
Coach engineers on career growth, scope expansion, and technical depth
Stay close to the code- contributing to architecture, design, and implementation when needed
Collaborate with internal stakeholders to drive technical strategy- balancing speed, scalability, and correctness
Build a strong partnership with Product, shaping roadmap decisions and clarifying tradeoffs early
Increase engineering velocity through better systems, prioritization, and AI-enabled developer workflows
Identify and remove technical and organizational bottlenecks
Hold cross-functional partners accountable while maintaining strong, high-trust relationships
Foster a culture of ownership, urgency, and thoughtful execution
Who You Are
8+ years of experience building and shipping production software
2+ years of engineering management experience in a B2B SaaS environment
Strong track record of hiring and developing high-performing engineers
Experience building structured, high-quality interview processes
Technically credible and comfortable in a player-coach role
Demonstrated ability to increase team output without proportionally increasing headcount
Strong architectural judgment across backend and/or product systems
Deep partnership experience with Product and PMs
Comfortable bringing structure to ambiguous problems
Deep familiarity with modern developer workflows, including practical use of AI-assisted development tools
High ownership mindset with a bias toward impact
Fintech experience is a plus
