Kitchen Support Floater, In-School

About the Role

The Kitchen Support Floater, In-School is a dynamic role and integral part of our kitchen teams, helping to serve and deliver healthy, made-from-scratch meals to hundreds of children every day. This position provides hands-on support across multiple Red Rabbit school kitchens throughout the five boroughs of New York City, traveling between locations based on daily staffing and operational needs.

The ideal candidate has experience working in a fast-paced kitchen, is reliable, flexible, and has a “can-do” attitude. The critical functions of the position include traveling between assigned schools, working in partnership with our kitchen teams, serving meals to students, assisting with light food prep, and helping to ensure every kitchen is always exceeding DOH standards.

Job Functions

  • Kitchen Coverage and Team Support: Travel to assigned school kitchens throughout the five boroughs of New York City to provide coverage and support based on staffing and operational needs. Work collaboratively with different teams and assist with receiving, stocking, setup, breakdown, and other tasks needed for a successful meal service.
  • Food Preparation and Meal Service: Assist with washing, cutting, portioning, assembling, garnishing, and packaging food according to Red Rabbit standards. Set up service areas and present and distribute meals with dignity to students while following portioning, meal-count, and school-timing requirements.
  • Food Safety and Kitchen Care: Help ensure the kitchen is always exceeding DOH standards by washing dishes and equipment, cleaning and sanitizing workstations and service areas, removing waste, and following proper food handling, storage, labeling, and sanitation procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Requirements

  • 2+ years professional culinary experience in a fast paced role in the service industry (i.e. restaurants), high volume kitchen production (i.e. commissary kitchen), or in a similar cafeteria role (i.e. schools/hospitals)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of proper food safety and sanitation practices
  • Must be familiar with using and maintaining industrial kitchen equipment
  • Must be reliable, punctual, and comfortable working at different school locations.
  • Must have a “can-do” attitude and be willing to assist wherever needed.
  • Must be able to function well within a team and work calmly and efficiently in a fast moving environment
  • Ability to follow instructions, recipes, portioning guidelines, and food-safety procedures.
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to travel between assigned school locations are required.
  • State Food Handler’s Certification required or must be obtained within 90 days of hire; reimbursement is available.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must share our passion for improving nutrition and health in schools.
  • Must be able to read and write in English. Bilingual (English and Spanish) a plus.

Additional Information

Job Type: Full-Time
Typical Hours: M-F, appx 6:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.; hours may vary by assignment
Location: Multiple school locations throughout five boroughs
Reports to: General Manager
Compensation: $19-$20
